But I never used the material for painting before this project. And I'm finding it very interesting. The ink is made by grinding the sumi stick on a inkstone. But I have learned that it makes finer tone to grind the stick well to make a thick deep tone first, then dilute it thinner with water. And you can control much wider range of the tone this way.

この襖絵の仕事を始めてから２年ほど墨を使ってきた。　小学校の頃に習字で墨を使ったことがあったが、絵を描くのに使うのはこの機会が初めてである。　そして意外と面白い画材であると感じるようになった。
墨を硯で擂るのだが、始めの頃は軽く擂ることで薄い調子を出していた。　でも墨は常に濃く練るように擂り、それを水で薄めることにより淡い調子を出したほうがキメも細かくなると教わった。　確かに濃く擂った墨を用途に合わせて薄めていく方が調子の幅もコントロールしやすくなると思う。

I've heard that many artists have moved into this town in last few years. But I tend to stay inside of my studio or just go up the mountains for hiking, so there hasn't really been much chance to meet other fellow artists in town. It will be interesting to check out other artists studio in the neighborhood and have them over to my space.
And it's a really good opportunity to clean up the space.

今月最後の週末にビーコン・オープン・スタジオという催しがある。
ビーコン市内で制作しているアーティスト達が同時にそのスタジオを一般に公開するという初めての企画である。　ここ数年間でかなりの数のアーティストがこの町に引っ越してきたことは聞いていたのだが、普段は自分のスタジオで制作しているか山へハイキングにいってしまうことが多いので、ほとんど交流がなかった。　でもこの機会に近所のアーティストの仕事場を覗いてみたり、また自分の空間に来てもらうのも面白いと思う。
それにスタジオの掃除をするためには実に良いチャンスである。

]]> Paintings 2009-08-25T17:34:40+09:00 Hiro FC2-BLOG http://hiroichikawa.blog60.fc2.com/blog-entry-198.html 大阪あべの橋駅から近鉄線に約４５分ほど乗り、上ノ太子という駅で降りる。　小さな駅で売店など一つもない。プリントアウトした近郊の地図を開き、聖徳太子御廟に向かって歩き出す。バスも出ているようなのだが、１時間に一本というスケジュールだし、やはり歩きながらのほうが景色を楽しむことができる。上ノ太子は近年大阪市のベッドタウンということで開発が進み、駅から御廟までの岡は真新しい住宅街に覆われていた。それでも 聖徳太子の陵がある叡福寺の境内にもだれも人がいない。　蝉の声が響くなか、陵の森の奥から鶯の鳴き声が聞こえてきた。
１６枚の襖絵の２枚はこの王陵の谷をテーマにと考えている。　

About 45 minutes ride on the Kintetsu Line from Abenobashi in Osaka, gets you to Kaminotaishi where you can visit a mausoleum of Prince Shotoku. There is a bus line from the station, but it runs only once an hour. So I have decided to take a walk. You can appreciate the scenery lot more by walking anyway. This area has been developed as a bed town of Osaka lately and the hills are covered with modern houses now. But at least those mountains surround the area have been unchanged since 6th,7th century. As you walk through one hill, you can spot the forest of prince Shotoku's mausoleum. There are four other mausoleums of emperors from Aska periods beside the Prince Shotoku and this area is called a Valley of Royal Mausoleums.
There was no one in the temple ground. 　 I spotted the chirping of nightingale among the sound of cicadas that filled the forest of the mausoleum behind the temple.
This Valley of Royal Mausoleums will be the theme of 2 panels out of 16.
