Crocus
ここ数日暖かい日が続き、庭の雪もだいぶ融けてきた。
先週雪が降りだす前に地面から顔を出したばかりのクロッカスの蕾に気がついた。でもすぐに雪になり、そのまま一週間も冷たい氷の下に埋もれたままになってしまい心配だったのだが、今朝見たらいくつかは倒れてしまったもののほとんどが元気だったので安心した。 一見繊細そうに見えるが、こうして元気に育っているクロッカスの生命力には感心させられる。
Last week, I found a few buds of crocuses. Then the snow came and they have been covered under the cold ice for more than a week. After a few days of warm weather, most of the snow in my yard has malted away. And finally the crocuses were uncovered this morning. Some of the buds have fallen down, but I was relieved to see most of them looked very healthy.
It’s really amazing to see the strength from such delicate looking flowers.

Daylight Saving
今夜から時計の針を１時間進ませることになる。
去年までは４月からサマータイムになったのだが、今年からひと月早くなるそうだ。
正確に言うとサマータイムではなく省エネ時間ということらしいのだが、いったい誰が決めるのか、まったく１時間損をしたような気持ちになる。
庭はまだ雪で真っ白なのだが、、、
The clock has to be set hour ahead tonight.
The summer time used to start in April until last year, but it got moved month earlier for some reason this year on.
Actually it's called daylight saving time. I have no idea who gets to decide to do this, but I feel like an hour was taken away too early.
The yard is still covered with snow...

One suitcase
少しずつブルックリンの家の荷物を整理しながらビーコンの家へ引っ越しをしている。小さい家なのに動かしてみると物の多さにいまさらながら驚かされる。でも普段はめったに見たこともない約２７年前にニューヨークへ初めて来た頃の写真が出てきたりして面白い。
この国に来たときはスーツケース一つだったのに、ずいぶん物が増えたものだ。
I'm in a process of moving from Brooklyn to Beacon little by little. Going down to Brooklyn every weekend and sorting out things to keep and things to throw away, it's surprising how many things I have been accumulating over the years. But it's interesting to find some old photographs from when I first came to New York 27 years ago.
I came here with just one suitcase back then, and now I feel like I have too much stuff.

Suddenly
突然だが、９９歳になった祖母が亡くなり、土曜日から日本に来ている。
暮れの忙しい時だが、飛行機のチケットも取れて土曜日の通夜と日曜日の葬儀に間に合うことができた。
明日の水曜日にはニューヨークに戻るので慌ただしいが、いつも日本に来るのは夏ばかりで１８年ぶりに見る冬の故郷の景色は懐かしかった。
祖母も９９歳になるまで元気でいてくれたし、葬儀も滞りなく行なうことができて有り難いことだと思う。
Suddenly, my grandmother who just turned 99 this fall past away and I've been in Japan since last Saturday.
Fortunately I could get the air tickets in time to attend the wake on Saturday night and the funeral on Sunday in spite of a busy time of the year.
It was very nostalgic to see the winter scenery of the town I grew up because I have been coming to Japan only in the summers for last 18 years.
I was thankful for the fact that my grandmother was healthy and well up until the end.

Cold front
今日は寒冷前線が通り過ぎ、強い風と雨のあとでやっと例年並みの寒さになった。
夜にはすっかり晴れ上がり、月に照らされた白い雲がすごい速度で流れていた。
A cold front past by today. Seasonal cold air finally arrived after the intense rain and wind.
The sky had cleared up by the nightfall. The clouds looked so white by the moon light and they were moving real fast.
