Insulation
今年になって初めての熱波で、日中３５度を越す日が２日続いている。でもアトリエの中は十分に断熱材を使ってあるので今のところ２４度以上には室温が上がらない。 クーラーもないのに暑い外から入ってくるとヒヤッと感じるほど快適である。 また７月８月と日本での展覧会がせまっているので、その準備が忙しいのだが涼しい仕事場は実に有り難い。
The first heat wave of this year has hit this area, and the temperature has risen above 95F for the last two days. But my studio is well insulated and keeping the heat out so far. The inside temperature stays below 75F. And it feels very cool when you come in from outside without any air conditioner. I’m very thankful to have this cool work space, especially when it’s busy preparing for the shows that are coming up this July and August in Japan.

Moon
よく晴れ渡った寒い冬の夜の満月は、はっとするほど明るい。その満月の光が地面に残った雪の上に降り注ぎ、くっきりと映しだされる枯れ枝の影が美しい。
４６億年前に地球が生まれた頃は、地球と月の距離は今の1/20ほどだったらしい。その頃の月はいったいどんなふうに見えていたのだろうか。満月の夜は曇った昼間の明るさと変わらなかったのかもしれない。 今よりもずっと大きな月の引力で起こる潮の満ち干の影響で、想像を絶するほどの大きな波が出来たばかりの大洋を覆っていたことだろう。
それ以来、月は地球を廻りながら少しずつ離れていき、今でも１年に３㎝ほど遠ざかっているという。お互いの重力が届かなくなる時、月は地球を廻る軌道から外れて虚空の彼方に飛んでいってしまう、なんていうことはまだこれから何十億年後の出来事なわけで、そのころにこの地球上に人間が生息していることができるのかも分からない。でもそんなことを考えていると月の明かりに照らし出された景色がいっそう美しく見える。
The full moon of a cold winter night is astonishingly bright. The shadows of trees cast by the clear moonbeam upon the snow on the ground are breathtaking.
When the earth and moon were born 4.6 billion years ago, the distance between them was 1/20 closer than today’s. It’s hard to imagine how the moon appeared in the sky back then. The full moon must have been so big and was as bright as daylight with some overcast. The gravity of the moon was so big that it must have created unimaginably large waves on the newly formed oceans.
Since then, the moon has been getting farther from the earth little by little. And even now, it’s moving away from us about an inch every year. Some day, when the gravity of both the earth and the moon can’t hold each other, the moon will spin away into the void of the universe. Fortunately such a scenario won’t happen for next few billion years, and human race may not still be here on the earth to witness it.
Anyway, such a thought makes me appreciate the beautiful scenery of moonlight even more.

Falling minerals
今朝９時頃から雪が降りだして、あっと言う間に辺り一面が真っ白になった。
雪というのは結晶構造をもっているので鉱物に分類されるという科学雑誌の記事をふと思い出した。
外に出て黒い手袋に落ちる雪をみると、その結晶がはっきり見えて実に綺麗だった。
雪は枯れ木立の細い枝にもよく積もり、白く強調された繊細な線で家のまわりの景色が覆われる。
雪は夜まで降り続き、白い鉱物のカーペットが敷きつめられる。
Snow started to fall around 9 o'clock this morning. Everything was turned white
right away.
A magazine article talking about snow is actually categorized as minerals because
of it's crystal structures, popped into my head.
The snow flakes landed on my black gloves showed beautiful crystal shapes. And
they stuck on those thin bare tree branches very well. The scenery around my
house was accentuated with the intricate white lines.
The snow kept falling well into the night, and laid a thick carpet made of white
minerals.

Autumn Hike
天気の良い秋の日だったので、またマウントビーコンへハイキングに行ってきた。 暖かかったため登り道ではすっかり汗をかいてしまったが、やはり頂上までたどり着くと気持ちがよい。 紅葉を期待していたのだけれど、暖かい陽気が続いているせいなのか、夏から秋にかけて降雨量が少なかったせいなのか、あまり鮮やかではなくてちょっと期待はずれだった。来週あたりはもっと綺麗な紅葉が見れるかもしれない
Because it was such a fine autumn day, I went to hike the mount Beacon again today. The temperature was little warmer, so it made me sweat on the way up. But once I reached the peak, the panoramic view and the clear air felt so refreshing. The foliage wasn't as spectacular as I was expecting. I'm not sure if it's due to the warm weather of late, or lack of the rain in this fall. Maybe the foliage will turn much nicer later on.

Purple Veil
今年は春の訪れが例年よりもだいぶ遅れている。
先日はアメリカ北東部を覆う大きな低気圧の嵐のため、１日で１月分の雨が降るという大雨に見舞われ近所の家の地下にも水が出たり、道路が洪水のために閉鎖されたり、今日もまだ小雨が残り空は雨雲に覆われている。
膨らみかけた木々の新芽たちもまだ固く閉ざされたままである。 でもひとつひとつは赤みがかった小さな新芽で遠くから見ると森全体が紫色に色づいてきている。
An arrival of a spring is very slow this year.
A month worth of rain fell within one day on last Sunday in this north-eastern part of the United State. And some streets were closed due to flooding and many neighbor’s house got water in their basements. The sky is still covered with clouds and it rained on and off until today.
Those buds of trees are tightly closed still. But each small bud has reddish color and when you look at the woods from the distance, it seems that they are cover with purple veil
