Ten Thousand Leaves
聖徳太子の時代の空気をなんとか感じたいと思い、日本の７世紀前後の事が書かれている物を色々読み始めたのだが、様々な解釈があって面白い。しかし正史とされている日本書紀の解釈を巡っての時代考証が中心なので、そこに書かれているものは主に支配階級から見た世界観である。 ところが８世紀の中頃に編纂された万葉集には７世紀初頭から８世紀の間に詠まれたと思われる作者不明の和歌も数多く収められているようで実に興味深い。 4500首以上もの歌の中には防人歌や東歌などの明らかに当時の庶民のものと思われる歌もあるようで、時間をかけて少しずつ読みながら何かを感じ取れたらと思っている。

In an attempt to feel the feel of the era of Prince Shotoku, I've started to read a lot of materials around the seventh century of Japan. But most of the materials are the interpretation of the Chronicles of Japan witch was written and edited by the ruling class of the eighth century. On the other hand, there is an oldest book of poems called Manyoshu, meaning a collection of ten thousand leaves, compiled mid eighth century. It contains over 4500 waka, a form of poems at that time, written sometime between the seventh and the eighth century. The collection has not only the poems written by figures in high court, but also there were many poems written by unknown authors who could be ordinary people from the period. I'd like to read those poems and hoping to grasp some of the feeling of that era.
It's funny that I hated Japanese History classes when I was in a high school.
