On wood
木の板に直接油彩で描くことについて、何度か質問を受けたことがある。
その中の一つに、保存状態に関してのものがあった。
正直言って、この技法は誰かから教わったものでもなく、長い期間積み上げられたデータもないので、長期的な予測はできない。
基本的には、木肌に絵の具の顔料を染込ませるといった、ステイニングと同じような要領での着彩なので家具などのように直射日光などを避ければ、激しい変色はないものと考えている。
それに、木と付き合っているのだから、多少の変化はあっても良いと思っている。

Few people have asked me about this technique of painting on wood panels.
One of the questions was about conservation.
To tell you the truth, no one has taught me this technique, nor do I have data that have been accumulated in long period of time. Therefore I can’t predict what will happen to them in the future.
But basically, the way oil paints get applied is very similar to the staining technique used on furniture. If it could avoid direct sunlight, it should last many years without showing drastic change in colors.
Actually, I feel like having a little change is natural, because it is wood I’m dealing with after all.

物が時間と共に変化していくことって、自然なことだとおもいます。伝統的な欧米の考え方は、絵画はできるだけそれが描かれた状態のまま保存できることが良しとされていますが、東洋の思想では必ずしも恒久的な保存が大切でないようなところがありますね。
