Proportion
合板を好きな大きさに切ってそれに絵を描いているのだが、縦横の比率をどうやって決めるかいろいろと考えたり試したりするのも楽しみの一つである。 木目を見ながら感覚的に長方形を切り出したり、市販されてる一枚の板からできるだけ無駄なく大小の形を切り出したり、時には黄金比や白銀比を使ってみたりもする。
日本やヨーロッパで使われる書類のA4サイズなども白銀比を使っているのでかなり馴染みのある長方形である。 アメリカで一般的に使われているレターサイズはもっと馴染みのある長方形なのだが、その11 x 8.5 インチという比率がいったいどこからきたのかよく分かっていないらしい。
When I cut a sheet of plywood to make panels for the paintings, it's fun to try many different ways to come up with the proportion. Sometimes I am able to find rectangles intuitively by looking at the wood grains. Sometimes I try to find the most efficient way to divide 4 x 4 feet plywood into various sizes. Sometimes I use the golden ratio or the silver ratio.
Silver ratio is a familiar rectangle because it's used in official paper size A4 in Europe and Japan. In the United State, the ratio of 11 x 8 1/2 inches is the official size, but the origin of this proportion is not very clear.
