ビーコンのアトリエで静かな時間を過ごした後、車でニューヨーク市内に戻ってくると、いまさらながら人の多さに驚かされる。そのうえまだどんどん新しいビルが建っているのだが、いったいどこからこれだけの人が来るのか不思議に思うことがある。
世界人口というのを調べてみたら、ぼくの生まれた１９５９年頃は３０億弱だったのが、２００６年の２月にはその倍以上の６５億に達したと言う。
After spending a quiet time in my studio in Beacon, it's mind boggling to see so many people in New York City. Even though I've done it for years, I feel the same way every time when I drive back into the city. And it's amazing to see so many buildings are still being built as well. I really wonder where all these people are coming from.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world population was just under 3 billion in 1959 the year I was born. And it had reached 6.5 billion in February 2006.
