Marcury Passing
アメリカからは今月８日、日本では９日に水星が太陽を横切って移動していくのが観測された。
一世紀に１３回だけ訪れる稀なイベントらしい。 もちろん肉眼で観ることはできないが、NASAの動画像でその様子を観ることが出来る。
燃え盛る太陽を背景に一直線に移動する水星から、なぜか不思議と生き物の意思のようなものを感じた。
Mercury transit was observed on 8th from the U.S. and 9th from Japan this month.
This rare event happens only 13 times in one century. Although it can not be seen with naked eyes, you can view the video clips on NASA's website.
Watching the Mercury passing straight across the burning sun, it almost looked as if it had a will of itself.

Antennae Gallaxies
ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡から二つの銀河系が衝突しているところの鮮明な画像が送られてきた。
この衝突はすでに数十億年前から始まっていて、その過程の中でまた新たに幾千もの星が生まれているそうだ。
自分の尺度ではどうにも実感できる規模ではないのだが、なぜこんなにも美しいのだろう。
The most recent photograph that Hubble Space Telescope has sent us was this sharp image of two galaxies colliding to each other. They estimate this collision had started a few hundred million years ago, and still generating thousands of new stars in the process.
In terms of the scale of time and space, it's far beyond the comprehensible range of my senses. But it sure looks beautiful.

Naked eyes
秋が深まり大気中の湿度が下がってくると、ブルックリンの裏庭からでも星が見えるようになる。
でもアトリエのあるビーコンの夜空の方がずっと星の数も増え、空を見上げる時間も長くなるようにおもえる。
インターネット上で沢山の天体写真が気軽に見れるようになったのは嬉しいことだが、やはり肉眼で星を見る時間は捨て難い。
As an autumn deepens, humidity in the air decreases. The clear air enables the stars to be more visible even from a backyard of Brooklyn. But the night sky in Beacon is far more clearer than one in the city. And it makes me want to watch the stars longer.
It has become very convenient to be able to view a lot of fascinating images from the space on the internet. But it's still hard to discard the time to look up the night sky with the naked eyes

Out of a scale
太陽系の惑星は、その中心にある太陽から遠ざかれば遠ざかるほど太陽の重力から受ける影響が弱まり、公転の速度が遅くなるという。ところが、銀河系という規模では、中心に近い惑星系と外側に近い惑星系との速度はほとんど変わらずに回転しているそうだ。なぜそうなるのか、今の科学ではまだよく分かっていないらしい。
夏が過ぎ、秋になるとどんどん日が短くなっていく。 そんなことからもこの地球の公転を感じ取ることができるのだけど、銀河系が廻っているということはあまりにも遠過ぎて感覚だけでは届かない。
The planets of our solar system lose their speed of the orbital revolution as they get farther away from the sun, because the force of the sun's gravity becomes weaker with the distance. However, in a galactic scale, the speed of a planetary system rotating near the center of the galaxy is almost same as a planetary system moving near the outer edge of the galaxy. There seem to be no clear answer for this by a current science yet.
After the summer days gone by, you could feel the earth's orbital revolution by the length of a day getting shorter as it passing through an autumn. But it is too far out of a scale to feel the movement of our Milky Way.

Tornado
夕べは大きな夕立があった。強い風と雨でちょっと怖いくらいだったが、今日になってニュースを読んだらニューヨーク市のすぐ北にあるウェストチェスターに竜巻が降りたという。 この地域ではかなり珍しいことである。
やはり地球温暖化のせいなのか、天候がかなり極端になってきているような気がする。
There was a big thunder storm list night. It was pretty scary to see such intense rain and wind. When I read the news today, they said a tornado touched down in Westchester county last night. It's very rare to have a tornado in this region.
I wonder if this was due to the global warming. But it seems that weather pattern has became more extreme lately.

I wonder if this was due to the global warming. But it seems that weather pattern has became more extreme lately.
