The Hudson River
昨日は知人の葬儀に参列。
葬儀の後、しばらく会っていなかった友人たちと飲んだので、その後車を使わず久々に電車でビーコンまで来た。
窓から見えるハドソン川の景色を見ていると、あっと言う間に時間がたってしまう。
There was a funeral of a friend yesterday.
After the funeral, I had a few drink with the friends who haven't seen for a long time. So I took a train up to Beacon afterwards in stead of driving.
Time passes so fast looking at the beautiful scenery of the Hudson river from the train.

Time passes so fast looking at the beautiful scenery of the Hudson river from the train.
Spring shower
雨に濡れて黒く光った木の幹のまわりを、新緑の葉が小さな粒のように漂う。
野生の白いハナミズキの花が森の奥でほころびはじめ、
黒と薄緑色の雨の森の中でそこだけ陽がさしたように明るく輝く。
そんな景色の中を走り抜けてアトリエに着き、
描きかけの作品の前に座りもう一度その色や光を思い浮かべる。
When it rains, the barks of trees get dark and shiny.
Young leaves float around those black barks like small particles.
Wild dogwoods just started to bloom.
It looks as if the sun shines just onto those white blossoms in the forest of black and creamy green.
Driving through such a scenery, I arrived at the studio.
Sitting in front of an ongoing painting,
trying to remember the colors and the lights of the forest again.
Drive
ここ数年、車でブルックリンとビーコンを行ったり来たりの生活だが、途中の景色を見たりするのが結構いい気分転換となっている。
マンハッタンを抜けてブロンクスを通り過ぎると、あとはほとんど木立の中のドライブだから、季節ごとにいろいろな表情の景色を楽しめる。
ちょうど今頃はレンギョウが満開で道路沿いに燃え上がるような黄色が美しい。
Last few years, I have been driving back and forth between Brooklyn and Beacon. The drive is a good change of a pace looking at the sceneries around.
After driving through busy Manhattan and the Bronx, rest of the roads are mostly surrounded by trees so that you can enjoy the different views in each seasons.
The flaming yellow bushes of forsythia are just stunning this time of a year.

マンハッタンを抜けてブロンクスを通り過ぎると、あとはほとんど木立の中のドライブだから、季節ごとにいろいろな表情の景色を楽しめる。
ちょうど今頃はレンギョウが満開で道路沿いに燃え上がるような黄色が美しい。

２００１年の春にアトリエをブルックリンからビーコンへ移した。
いろいろな理由があったのだが、その一つにニューヨーク市の不動産の高騰がある。
ぼくがニューヨーク市に住み始めた８０年代は、アーティスト達が制作しながら住めるロフトスペースが手頃な家賃でいたるところにあった。まだ７０年代の不況の影響が残っていた当時は、確かに今と比べると危険も多かったが、面白かった。今思うとニューヨーク独特の匂いがしていたように思う。 しかし景気が良くなるにつれて、街は綺麗になり安全になった。アーティストが住んでいた広いロフトスペースは富裕層の人達にも人気が出て値上がりを始め、今ではとても手の出ない値段になっている。 最近は多くのアーティスト達はニューヨーク市を出てビーコンのような郊外の街などの都市部を取り囲む地域に拡散している。
I moved my studio from Brooklyn to Beacon in a spring of 2001.
There were many reasons to do so, and one of them was the inflated real estate prices. During the 80's, many loft spaces were still available for the artists with fairly reasonable rent all over the city. Having the left over conditions from the 70's depression, the air of the city was much more exciting, even though it wasn't as safe as it is now. It felt like there was this particular flavor to the city. But as the economy of the city improved over the years, it got cleaner and safer. And spacious loft spaces had became more desirable amongst richer people as well, and it drove the prices up way beyond the reach of the artists.
Nowadays, many artists have moved out of the city and spread out around the edge of the metropolitan area.

New leaves
My studio is located in a town called Beacon. It's a small town right on the Hudson river about an hour and half drive from Manhattan.
Early spring is so nice to do some yard work outside. But time goes so fast when you are playing with the earth.
Just around this time, all of the leaf buds are starting to sprout. Each of the buds are very small yet, but since there are so many of them, the scenery seems to keep changing in every moment.

春先は日中の気温も上がり、庭仕事が気持ちいい。しかし外で土をいじっているとあっという間に時間が経ってしまう。
ちょうど今頃は木々の芽が吹きだして美しい。一つ一つの芽は小さいのだがそれが一斉に出てくるから、見る見るうちに風景が変わっていくようである。
