Soft hail
今朝また雪が降りはじめた。正確に言えば霰というのだろうか。
普通の雪は音もなく降るのだが、今日は小さな氷の塊が地面に柔らかく当たる不思議な音で満たされている。
エスキモーには雪を表す言葉は何十種類もあると聞く。 彼らだったらこの雪をどうよぶのだろう。
夜になっても降り続き、雪掻きをするとまるで粗目砂糖のような感触である。
It started to snow this morning again. Actually this might be called soft hail.
Snow usually falls quietly, but this one is filling up the air with peculiar sounds when the tiny particles of ice hit the ground softly.
Eskimos are supposed to have more than twenty words to describe snow. I wonder what would they call this one.
It kept falling into the night. When I was shoveling, the texture felt like sugar crystals.

Blue hue
先日の雪がまだ融けずに庭を白く覆っている。
明るい満月の光がその雪を青っぽく照らしだし、
その上を枯れ木の枝の影が流れる。
The yard is still covered with the snow from a few days ago.
Bright light from the full moon illuminates the snow with pale blue hue,
casting the shadows of bare tree branches like streams.

The first snow
暖かい冬が一転して例年並みの寒さが訪れ、今日はこの冬初めての雪が降った。
うっすらと積もっただけだったが、早く咲いてしまったボケの花がとても寒そうに見える。
The warm winter had changed back to usual coldness, and it snowed for the first time this season today. It didn't accumulate much but everything got covered with a thin layer of white. The flowers of Japanese quince which had bloomed early this year looked very cold.

Unpredictable
真冬のはずなのに不気味なほど暖かい日が続いている。
今年はまだ雪が降っていないどころか、我が家の庭の木瓜も花が咲いてしまった。
ところが数日前はアメリカの中西部では記録的な寒波に襲われ、日本の上空でも異常な低気圧が発達して各地に大雪をもたらしているという。
今年の冬はこのまま雪を見ることなく終わってしまうのだろうか。そしてものすごく暑い夏が来るのだろうか。
気象のパターンが著しく変わってきているのは確かであり、これからもっと予測できなくなっていくような気がする。
It has been strangely warm even in a midwinter these days.
Not only I haven't seen any snow this winter yet, but flowers of Japanise quince in my yard have bloomed today.
On the other hand, the Midwest had suffered unexpected cold wave a few days ago, and an unusual low pressure system brought heavy snow elsewhere in Japan too.
I wonder if this winter will be over without seeing any snow this year, and followed by a very hot summer around here.
It's certain that the weather pattern has changed, and it'll become even more unpredictable.
