2日前に日本から戻り、今日個展に出品した作品の数点も届いた。
あとの作品は日本に残りそれぞれの場所で飾られ、また自分の知らない人々に見てもらえると思うと嬉しい。 発表した作品にまた手を加えることはまずないのだが、手元に戻った作品をどうするかは自分で決めることができる。しかし人手に渡った作品はもう自分の所有物ではなくなり、その運命に関与することができないと思うとすこし不思議な気持ちになる。
Got back from Japan 2 days ago, and some of the paintings from the shows came back today.
The rest of the paintings stay in Japan. Its a pleasant feeling that those work will be hang in each place and they will be looked at by more people who I don't know. I don't usually rework on the paintings from shows, but feel like I still have a control over them. Yet its a little strange feeling that those works bought by someone else are not my property any more and have no control over them.

Asuka
先日、個展の会期中ではあったが聖徳太子探訪の旅として、太子が生まれ育ち、また当時の曽我氏の基盤でもあった奈良県明日香村を訪ねた。早朝、京都から近鉄線に乗り橿原神宮前で下り駅員に行き方を訪ねると、レンタル自転車があると教えてくれた。 飛鳥地方は古い遺跡がかなり広範囲に点在しているので自転車で回るのが便利らしく、駅前にはいくつもレンタル自転車の店がある。 聖徳太子の生涯を主題とした襖絵の制作にあたり、この飛鳥地方の風景を是非見て来たいと思った。太子が生まれたと言われる橘寺、曽我馬子の凌といわれている石舞台をめざして自転車をこぎ始める。 自分のペースでゆっくりと景色を見ながら自転車で廻れるのは有り難かったのだが、３５度を越す真夏の快晴。それに起伏の多い野道を変速ギアのない自転車は、かなりキツかった。
タオルを頭にまき、ボトルの水で水分を補給しながらなんとか橘寺にたどりつき、金堂の太子像の前に座ったら、面白いように体中から汗が文字通り滝のように流れ出た。でも暑さの中で思いっきり体を動かして汗をかいてみるのがこれほど気持ち良いことかと、あらためて驚く。蝉の声に囲まれ、人気のないお堂で暑さにもかかわらず実に良い時間が流れた。
Yesterday, I visited Asuka village for a research of Prince Shotoku screen painting project. Kintetsu line brought me to Kashiwara-Jingumae from Kyoto in early morning. When I asked a station attendant for a direction to Asuka, he suggested me to take a rental bike. Since many historical sites are scattered around in this area, bicycle seems to be the best vehicle to move around.
In order to develop imagery for the screen painting, I really wanted to see the landscape of where Prince Shotoku spent his childhood. So I set out to visit Tachibana-temple which is believed to be where he was born. It was a good idea to take a bike trip so that I could look around the scenery as I ride through a beautiful country side rode. But it was bit tough to pedal on a hilly rode with a bike with no gear in a very hot and muggy summer day. When I arrived at the temple and sat in a main hall, I was soaked in sweat and it kept coming down like a waterfall. But for some reasons, it felt really good. Despite the heat, I could spend surprisingly calm and peaceful time in the temple.

excess wood
木を使って物を作っていると、どうしても余り材がでてくる。そんな余材も無駄にしたくないので小さい木片にも絵の具をつけてみる。
日本での展覧会のために作品を送り出した後のやけに広く感じる仕事場で小さな作品に向かいながら、ゆっくりと筆を動かしていると実に気持ちが落ち着いてくる。
You can't avoid generating remnants of wooden pieces when you work with wood. Since I don't want to waist those excess, I often paint on those small pieces of wood as well. It is indeed very calming to face a very small piece of work, in a studio that feels much bigger after shipping those paintings for the shows in Japan.

Oscillating impression
制作をはじめて早い時期に基本的な色を選び、点を打ち始める場所を決める。その時点では漠然としたイメージがあるだけである。 時間とともに点の数が増え、形が進み、作品が動く。 進行中の作品は筆を加えているときに限らず、眺めている時でも動いている。 そうやって動いてきたイメージが固まって来た時に、その作品は完成に近づく。 ただ、完全にイメージがハッキリと固まることはないような気がする。
一つの作品が終わり、もう自分で筆を加えることは無いと決めた後でも、やはりイメージはゆらゆらと動き続けているように感じる。
The basic color and the area to begin placing the dots are chosen in the early stage of a painting. At that stage, the image of the painting is vague. As the painting progresses, the number of the dots increases, the forms shift, and the impression moves on. The impression keeps moving not only when the paint is being added on, but while it’s being looked at.
As the impression starts to form a firmer image, it suggests the end of the painting is approaching.
Yet, it seems that the impression would never get fixed, even after I decide not to add any more touches to the painting. It feels as if the impression keeps oscillating.

Insulation
今年になって初めての熱波で、日中３５度を越す日が２日続いている。でもアトリエの中は十分に断熱材を使ってあるので今のところ２４度以上には室温が上がらない。 クーラーもないのに暑い外から入ってくるとヒヤッと感じるほど快適である。 また７月８月と日本での展覧会がせまっているので、その準備が忙しいのだが涼しい仕事場は実に有り難い。
The first heat wave of this year has hit this area, and the temperature has risen above 95F for the last two days. But my studio is well insulated and keeping the heat out so far. The inside temperature stays below 75F. And it feels very cool when you come in from outside without any air conditioner. I’m very thankful to have this cool work space, especially when it’s busy preparing for the shows that are coming up this July and August in Japan.
