More colors
このところひとつの作品に使う点の色が増えてきている。今までは微妙に違う大きさの点が集まってできる濃淡の調子を見ながら作品を進めることが多かったのだが、最近は異なった色調の点を隣り合わせて置くことによってできる効果も積極的に取り入れるようになった。調子という要素の他に色相という要素が増え、画面に寄ったり引いたりしながら眺める時間がまた増えているようだ。
Lately, more colors have been used for the dots on each painting. In the past, I have been working with tone created by slightly different sizes of dots in the same color. But I am consciously using different groups of colors next to each other in the works I'm working right now. It adds more elements of hue and color balance on top of tonal vocabulary, and it seems to take more time to look at the paintings moving closer and pulling back.

Tentacles of imaginations
深海の研究が進むにつれ、いままでほとんど知られていなかった太陽の光の届かない世界の様子が少しずつ明らかになってくる。太陽の光が無いのだから光合成によるエネルギーもなく生命の存在すら疑問視されていたのが、海底火山の近辺には硫化水素から栄養をとる独特の生態系があり、多くの生物が新しく発見されている。そんな光の無い世界なのにそこに生息する生き物が実に様々な形態をもっているのが興味深い。
遠い天体での出来事にしてもそうなのだが、どうしてこうも日常からかけ離れた世界に惹かれるのだろう。実際に見ることの出来る映像は限られているが、そこから勝手に想像を膨らませるのがとても面白い。想像の世界の中でイメージの触手を伸ばしていくような感覚。絵を描いている以上、視覚はたしかに大切な感覚なのだが、視覚以外の感覚も使って形を探していきたいのかもしれない。
As the studies for deep-sea progresses, the world where the sunlight doesn’t reach becomes more visible under the spotlights. The life forms in deep ocean floors were once considered very scarce due to the lack of energy sources. But recent studies are revealing a new ecosystem that uses hydrogen sulfide from hydrothermal vents as a main source of energy, and it’s very rich in many different kinds of life forms. It’s fascinating to see so many different shapes of life in a lightless world.
The world is so far away from our day-to-day life. The information you can get about the world is very limited. But you could always utilize imaginations to explore such a remote world on your own, using tentacles of imagination to feel the way through. It seems to fit the approach of my painting to feel the shapes as I move through a landscape of the imaginary worlds.

Shape Shifting
波型に点を打つ繰り返しだけでひとつの作品をつくろうと思って始めたのだが、思っていた以上に時間がかかる。ただ点を打っていくだけだったらだいたい１分間に６０個ほどの点を画面に置くことができるのだが、実際に点を置くごとに変わっていく形態を気にしはじめると、画面を眺めている時間の方がどうしても長くなる。 眺めながら頭の中で形が動き始める。 その形を追うように点を打つのだが、打っているうちにまた形が変わり、もう一度画面を見直す。 そんな作業を繰り返しているうちに時間はどんどん過ぎていく。 時間を作品の中に塗り込めることができたらと思う。
I started one painting with an intention of using just one pattern of wave shaped dots. It's taking way longer than I initially anticipated. I could put about 60 dots per minutes if I focus only on the action of just putting dots. But as the dots forms shapes, I have to pull back from the action and start looking at them, foreseeing which direction to go, developing those shapes in my head ahead. Then get back to the action, chasing those images in my head. Yet the images in my head keep shifting as I putting more dots. Repeating such a process consumes so much time. I wish if I could paint time into the painting.

Moon
よく晴れ渡った寒い冬の夜の満月は、はっとするほど明るい。その満月の光が地面に残った雪の上に降り注ぎ、くっきりと映しだされる枯れ枝の影が美しい。
４６億年前に地球が生まれた頃は、地球と月の距離は今の1/20ほどだったらしい。その頃の月はいったいどんなふうに見えていたのだろうか。満月の夜は曇った昼間の明るさと変わらなかったのかもしれない。 今よりもずっと大きな月の引力で起こる潮の満ち干の影響で、想像を絶するほどの大きな波が出来たばかりの大洋を覆っていたことだろう。
それ以来、月は地球を廻りながら少しずつ離れていき、今でも１年に３㎝ほど遠ざかっているという。お互いの重力が届かなくなる時、月は地球を廻る軌道から外れて虚空の彼方に飛んでいってしまう、なんていうことはまだこれから何十億年後の出来事なわけで、そのころにこの地球上に人間が生息していることができるのかも分からない。でもそんなことを考えていると月の明かりに照らし出された景色がいっそう美しく見える。
The full moon of a cold winter night is astonishingly bright. The shadows of trees cast by the clear moonbeam upon the snow on the ground are breathtaking.
When the earth and moon were born 4.6 billion years ago, the distance between them was 1/20 closer than today’s. It’s hard to imagine how the moon appeared in the sky back then. The full moon must have been so big and was as bright as daylight with some overcast. The gravity of the moon was so big that it must have created unimaginably large waves on the newly formed oceans.
Since then, the moon has been getting farther from the earth little by little. And even now, it’s moving away from us about an inch every year. Some day, when the gravity of both the earth and the moon can’t hold each other, the moon will spin away into the void of the universe. Fortunately such a scenario won’t happen for next few billion years, and human race may not still be here on the earth to witness it.
Anyway, such a thought makes me appreciate the beautiful scenery of moonlight even more.

小さな点で画面を埋めていく作業は時間がかかる。しかしその時間の経過を感じながら作品がゆっくり進んでいくのは面白い。
先日テレビで地球の歴史についての科学番組をやっていた。この地球は生まれてから推定４６億年経っているらしい。いったいどうやってこんな数字が出て来るのかまったく分からないし、その長さを実感することもできない。しかし地球の一生を１日に喩えると、人類が地球上に生息してきた期間は真夜中になる前のほんの数秒だという。地球を覆う海水がどうやってできたかはまだはっきり分かっていないらしいが、生まれたてのまだ熱い地球が急激に冷えていくときに蒸気として大気を覆った水分が雨となり、数億年間、人類がこの地球上に生息してきた時間よりも長い歳月を降り続けて海ができたと言う説がある。
そんな取り留めもない時間の経過を漠然と考えながらゆっくり点を打つ。
It takes time to fill the surface of a panel with small dots. But it’s pleasing to see the slow progress while feeling the time passing.
There was a TV show on the history of Earth few days ago. They say that Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old. I have no idea how they came up with this kind of number, and have no way to sense this kind of scale of time. But if you compare the life of Earth as one day, the mankind appeared only a few seconds right before the midnight at the end of a day. No one knows how exactly the oceans were created. But some scientists say that the steam evaporated from a new born hot Earth fell back to the surface as rain for a few hundred million years continuously. It was longer than the time mankind has lived on this planet.
And I just keep putting small dots slowly, toying with such rambling thoughts.
